Who is the woman who may be Germany's new Chancellor

German Green Party environmentalists announced on Monday that for the first time, this political force would place a candidate for the post of Chancellor of the country, presenting as a candidate for the September national elections co-chairman Annalena Baerbock, while Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right bloc has plunged into a conflict [...]

Backock's appointment was announced by the other party co-chairman, Robert Habeck, in a well-organised activity that highlighted the contrast with the tense stalemate in Chancellor Merkel's bloc.

The 26 September parliamentary elections are unpredictable, in part because the current Chancellor is not seeking re-election. Merkel pledged in 2018 not to seek a fifth four-year term. Recent polls have shown that the Greens rank second after the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and ahead of the Social Democrats, the other powerful party with centre-left views.

40-year-old Baerbox has been a lawmaker in the national parliament since 2013, but lacks experience in executive leadership. “Democracy is kept alive by the change,” said Backback.

I've never been a Chancellor or minister. I believe in regeneration, others support the status quo at”. She said she wants “a Germany in the heart of Europe; a country where climate protection creates the next basis for prosperity, freedom and security”.

Baerbock and Habeck have led the Green since the beginning of 2018. Under the leadership of this pragmatic and harmonious pair of parties, the party has experienced increased popularity in polls. The Greens are in opposition nationally, but have officials in local governing structures at 11 out of Germany's 16 dead bodies. Recent polls show support for the party of 20-22%, more than double the 8.9% it secured in the 2017 elections.

Baerbock's candidacy, the newest candidate to claim to take over Merkel and the only woman, requires approval by the party congress in June. She lives in a rural region of Brandenburg, where the Turkeys once faced difficulties creating their own base, but are now part of the local government. She has attended studies on political science and international law in Hamburg and London.

The Greens last month presented a programme to speed up abandoning energy from coal in Germany, increasing infrastructure spending and tariffs for the release of carbon gases. This political force is pro-European Union and takes a harsh stance on Russia, calling for an end to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

Backock has said there must be a joint, strong European “location towards Russia and China with a strong contribution from Germany. “Follow authoritarian forces in particular, we should have a foreign policy with a clear objective... to dialogue, but also be harsh at the same time”.

Despite the election outcome, the Green will most likely hold the key to forming Germany's next government. This party has become increasingly open to alliances with centre-right parties and is part of the local level in a set of coalitions of different compositions. Meanwhile, Chancellor Merkel's bloc is still awaiting a candidate for Chancellorship. Governors of Germany's two most populated countries, Armin Laschet and Markus Soeder, are struggling to receive the appointment.

Laschet, leader of Merkel and Souder's Christian Democrats (CDU), leader of the secular-minute party, declared on April 11th intentions to compete, raising concerns among many supporters that this could bring considerable damage to the coalition. Laschet and Soeder are governors of Nordhein-Westfalen and Bavaria respectively. \ Soeder has much better marks in the polls, but Laschet is the recently elected leader of a much larger party. A week ago, Laschet managed to secure support for the CDU leadership for his candidacy. But Soeder said the issue should not be solved only with discussions “in a small cremated”.

Some in Chancellor Merkel's party favour Soeder, while others are concerned by his power machines. On Sunday evening, leaders of the Christian Democratic Union's youth arm expressed themselves to Soeder. On Monday evening, Laschet called the CDU leadership meeting, saying he plans to propose how to resolve the dispute. “I hope we can make the necessary decisions soon this week,” he told reporters. Soeder said that, after a week of talks, it is up to the largest party to decide who will support it.

“If the CDU makes a clear decision this evening, we will respect it,” he said in Munich. “The CDU is our strongest and older sister, and only she can decide whether this vast crowd (for Soeder) really exists”. The Social Democrats, of whose ranks have emerged three of Germany's eight Chancellors after World War II, but in some time do not enjoy great popularity, nominated Finance Minister Olaf Scholz as their candidate for Chancellorship months ago.
