He made these comments in a debate organised by the Atlantic Council, during which he stressed that he does not expect a <x0-second light time for Serbia with the administration of US President Joe Biden”, emphasising differences over the Kosovo issue.
Serbia views the United States as the main supporters of Kosovo's independence, which it continues to reject.
However, the Serbian president, a former ultranationalist who claims to have turned into a pro-Western, said Serbia “needs the United States” and has been put in an effort to deepen relations with Washington.
We had thought we were the center of the world and I hope we understood the political situation in the world”, he said.
Kosovo and Serbia are expected to resume the process of talks on normalising relations between them with the European Union's mediation, which are supported by the United States.
Whatever we signed in Brussels 8 years ago must be fulfilled by both sides. And that's the problem. The other side was ready to sign because it was certain it should not apply anything”, the Serbian president said, criticising Pristina for “age”.
You don't hear from Serbia any kind of blackmail if you don't do that, we'll ask for war damages, we'll exercise an indictment against you. We hear that every day from Pristina, and there are no reactions from either the United States or the European Union. Even if we don't react any more”, he said, underlining that we need “to change the atmosphere and increase our trust among us. Not to view each other as enemies. We shouldn't create a hostile environment between us”.
The question is that the United States, Germany and powerful countries from the West say they are expecting Serbia to recognise Kosovo's independence. But when we ask what you offer, neither side can win anything. No one can even guarantee membership in the European Union”, he said, underlining that even when it comes to the Association of Serb majority municipalities that are envisioned with the Brussels Agreement “na say waits because in Pristina it is a new government and have problems”.
He said he has not paid attention to debates that prompted an informal document (non-paper) talked about in Balkan media, reportedly the proposal for changing borders in the region.
“You never heard from me or Serbia's prime minister that we support Greater Serbia, but you hear every day from Pristina and Tirana, and no one reacts to”, he said, stressing that the times of war in the Balkans have passed and people are fed up with wars.
Even if someone wants to fight us, we won't do that. I guarantee you”, he said
The Serbian president also spoke of the idea of the Balkan mini-sengent, praising it as an idea that is the future of the Western Balkan region. Criticising Kosovo, Montenegro and Bosnia's approach against this idea, he said some of the blame belongs to him as well.
We need to reevaluate our position and maybe change our approach. Maybe I'm more arrogant every now and then and I'm gonna have to change that. But they should also have a more rational approach”, he said, denying that this idea replaces European integrations that aspire from the Western Balkans. /voa
