Shala, known in the war as the “Commander Wolfface” was presented for the first time before the Special Court on Monday. After being asked by Judge Nicolas Guillou if he understood the charges he was charged with, Shala said: “They look funny to me.
He has been declared innocent over the charges.
I don't feel like I've committed a crime, except I have protected my country and my people, and I feel innocent”, Shala said.
Peter Shala was arrested on March 16, 2021 by Belgian authorities and transferred to The Hague on April 15, 2021, on the basis of a request for co-operation in implementing the arrest warrant and order for transfer issued by the Special Court.
An indictment has been confirmed against Shala. He is accused of war crimes as arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture and unlawful murder. The crimes he is accused of allegedly committed approximately between May 17th 1999 and June 5, 1999, against persons allegedly detained at Albania's Kukes metal factory.
