One of the two Russian diplomats, whom Bulgaria declared persons non grata due to spying charges on March 23rd, left the country, the Russian embassy in Bulgaria reported today.
Another Russian diplomat, who had previously been diagnosed with coronary, was healed and removed from Bulgaria's territory today,” said an embassy spokesman, as reported by the Russian agency TASS.
On March 23rd, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry declared the two diplomats at the Russian Embassy in Sofia as unwanted persons and gave them 72 hours to leave the country due to activities that are incompatible with their diplomatic status.
The Russian Embassy announced that “considers the Bulgarian side's” decision unequipped.
Prosecutors of the Republic of Bulgaria announced on 19 March that a group of the current six officials and former officials of the National Defence and Military Intelligence Ministry were arrested under suspicion of spying on Russia.
The operation was conducted with the support of the EU and the United States.
