The president of the United States, Joe Biden, had telephone conversations with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, for the first time since coming to power two months ago. Their conversation came after reports of the gathering of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border.
The White House chief assured the Ukrainian president of his firm support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression, the US government's statement said.
Russia said on Friday that its armed forces would develop military exercises near the Ukrainian border to practice protection against offensive fears, writes Free Europe.
Over 50 combat battalions, made up of 15 thousand soldiers, are expected to participate in military exercises against electronic equipment through air protection units, the Russian Defence Ministry's statement said.
Russian forces' exercises follow the increase in violence in eastern Ukraine, where government forces are facing separatists backed by Moscow. Over 13 thousand people have died from the war that began in 2014 to date.
In July of last year, Ukraine reached a ceasefire with separatists, but to be poor said they have repeatedly violated the agreement.
