The American diplomat said on Tuesday he would travel to the United States this week for consultations, days after the Kremlin suggested that Washington invite the ambassador after the diplomatic crisis between the two states. The TASS agency reported that Sullivan left Russia on Thursday.
Russia called for consultations its ambassador to Washington last month, after Joe Biden said he thinks his counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is a killer, and after the two countries imposed sanctions on each other, including the expulsion of diplomats.
Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said she hopes Sullivan's trip to the United States will not prove a waste of time, Reuters writes.
Our consultations with our ambassador are being actively held in Russia. We hope the US ambassador will spend his time constructively in Washington and that he will focus on consultations with organs that supervise bilateral relations issues with Russia”, Zakharova said.
