Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Emilia Rexhepi has confirmed that votes and quorum needed for the president's election have been secured.
“we are awaiting the chairmanship meeting. Session time is still unknown. It is expected to be in the afternoon”, Rexhepi said.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje movement has already collected the necessary signatures for the assembly's extraordinary session to be called to elect the new president, Radio Free Europe notes.
For the president's election hearing to be called, signatures of at least 40 deputies are needed. Then the headship of the assembly is gathered to set the time for holding this session.
Unofficially, the REL also finds that the Vetevendosje Movement is pushing it ahead of the assembly of a law that would regulate the issue of diaspora voting through the embassies Kosovo has in the world. This legislation, the LVV wants to present it before proceeding with the presidential vote.
Osmani, former official of the Democratic League of Kosovo, competed in the February 14th elections with LV and received the most votes, more than 300 thousand, respectively.
Her former party, the opposition LDK, has said during this week she will participate in the presidential vote.
However, it is still not clear how LDK deputies will act, despite the decision of leading this party, not to make obstacles in electing the president.
Opposition parties, the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo have been declared against the election of Osman. Meanwhile, support for Osman has expressed parties of the non-Serb communities.
On March 22nd, the assembly was established, and the same day the new government was elected. Kurti's government received the support of 67 deputies.
For the president's election, in the first two votes, two-thirds of the vote is needed, and it beats 80 votes for MPs. Meanwhile, in the third round, president is elected who gets the simple majority of 61 MPs, but in all three votes at least 80 MPs should participate.
If even the third round fails, the country goes to extraordinary elections that should be held within 45 days.
The LVV has 58 seats in the assembly, while the Democratic League of Kosovo has 15.
As of November 5th, 2020, Kosovo has been acting as incumbent on the president, after Hashim Thaci resigned from this position after confirming the war crimes indictment and crimes against humanity from the Specialised Chambers in The Hague. Vjosa Osmani exercised this post, and after being elected to the helm of the assembly, Glauk Konjufca also took up the post of office of the president.
