Cases are growing on a country scale, and this is mainly happening in young people, the senior health official said. One of the reasons cited by it as the cause for this steady increase in cases over the past four weeks was the significant spread of new strains of the virus, but also the increase in youth sports activities.
Walensky also noted positive developments among the most sensitive age group, saying deaths from the elderly virus have reached their lowest levels since early last autumn. More than 75% of people over 65 or older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and about 55% have been fully vaccinated.
