Russia will expel 10 American diplomats in retaliation against the expulsion of a similar number of Russian diplomats on the part of Washington.
The US expelled Russian diplomats because of claims of election intervention, cyber attacks and other malicious acts.
We will respond to this measure in an equal form. We will demand that 10 American diplomats in Russia leave the country”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a press conference with his Serbian counterpart. He also said President Vladimir Putin's top foreign policy assistant, Yuri Usshakov, had recommended that American Ambassador John Sullivan return to Washington to conduct serious “consultations”.
In March, Russia's ambassador to Washington returned to Moscow for consultations, following a statement by US President Joe Biden, who had named Putin “a killer”. Lavrov also stressed that Moscow is considering taking painful “measures that could target American businesses in Russia and impose sanctions on eight American officials.
Moscow also plans to ban activity in Russia of American funds and non-governmental organisations that interfere with domestic affairs, he said. These Moscow movements are taking place a day after the United States imposed widespread sanctions on Russia as retaliation for election interventions, cyber attacks and what Washington described as other harmful “activities in Moscow. US President Joe Biden announced on 15 April the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats and sanctions against dozens of individuals and other Russian entities.
