“Vaxination is the key to leaving the pandemic”, Merkel said, according to a post by her spokesman, Stephen Seibert.
The immunisation of the German Chancellor takes place two weeks after authorities have recommended vaccines with AstraZeneca only persons over the age of 60.
This year, Merkel, carries out her mandate after nearly 16 years in power.
Merkel had often been asked about her plans to vaccinate, but she had insisted that she would wait in line with strict rules of vaccinating priority groups in Germany.
German officials are making efforts to boost public confidence in the AstraZeneca vaccine.
At the end of March, authorities said people under the age of 60 could still receive the AstraZeneca vaccine in consultation with their doctor, and if they are fully aware of possible risks.
Several other countries, including France, Spain, and Canada, have also imposed restrictions on the immunization of AstraZeneca due to several cases of blood clotting.
Denmark this week completely banned the use of AstraZeneca due to these concerns.
