The jury was composed of 5 men and 7 women, and debated about 10 hours in two days, originally Monday, returning today with the final decision.
Chauvin had declared himself innocent of the charges filed, which were three, intentional murder of second degree, second degree murder meant to kill deliberately, and third degree, where the latter implies a deliberate act to cause damage, with no respect for the other's life.
The policeman could be tried on all three counts, with the sentence envisioned up to 10 years for the first charge, 40 years for the second grade murder and 25 for the third grade.
The murder of George Floyd and his call “I can't breathe! ”, addressed to the police, became a symbol of a wave of protest that crossed the borders of the United States, where allegations of police arrogance against colored persons were also joined by a global support against racism, directed by the “Black Livings Matter” movement.
The verdict was also attended by President Joe Biden himself, who changed his institutional meetings in the case.
