Walter Beot was arrested Tuesday in a car parking lot in Rome. A police source said he was handing the documents to a Russian military attaché for a 5 thousand-euro reward, writes. ReutersReport Express.
The source of justice bodies accessing this file said police have found a USB with 181 classified photos as confidential, nine classified photos as very confidential and 47 classified as NATO sectarian documents.
The Italian captain's lawyer, Roberto De Vita, told an Italian newspaper that his client has told Russia he has handed over data for money, but denied that he has uncovered classified documents.
Interviewed by the newspaper “Crrier della Sera”, lawyer De Vita said Biot had not been driven ideologically to do so and that he has never handed in documents that would put Italy or any other country at risk.
Italy, which has traditionally had better relations with Russia than many Western states, has expelled two Russian diplomats after that, and has described spying as a hostile act.
On the other hand, Russia's Foreign Affairs Ministry has been quoted as saying it expressed regret over the expulsion of its diplomats from Rome, but that this development does not threaten bilateral reports.
The Italian captain's lawyer, who was arrested for selling data, said his client has four children and one of them is seriously ill and needs special care.
I made a mistake, but I did it for my family. I had a moment of great weakness and frailty. I was involved in a mechanism that was bigger than me. I had a debt I couldn't repay”, the arrested Italian was quoted as saying.
