Von der Leyen, the first woman president of the commission, was left without chairs during a meeting Tuesday with Erdogan and Council of Europe President Charles Michelin.
The chief of the commission clearly sided with the two men to whom two chairs had been prepared.
During the day, Prime Minister Draghi told reporters: “I absolutely disagree with Erdogan's behaviour to President von der Leyen... I don't think it was appropriate behavior, and I am very sorry for the humiliation Von der Leyen had to suffer. ”
Then he added: “With these, let's call them what different visions and opinions are. ”
Shortly thereafter, the Italian ambassador to Ankara was summoned to Turkey's foreign ministry for questioning.
“We strongly condemn the discrus of Italian Prime Minister Draghi, and his ugly comments to our elected president,”, said Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
