Activists Human Rights News Agency (HRANA) reported that the two men charged had been arrested and transferred to a prison in Arak, capital of the province of Markazi, in May last year.
A city court reportedly sentenced the two men to the severest sentence for insulting the Prophet Muhammad. This charge in Iran carries the death penalty, writes Free Europe.
One of the convicts was identified as Yusuf Mehrad, the father of three children reportedly kept isolated in solitary confinement for two months after his arrest. He faces several other charges, including the insult of Iranian leaders and actions against national security. The other convict has not been identified.
In 2017, Iran had lifted the death sentence from a man convicted of offending the Prophet Muhammad in several Facebook posts. The sentence was rejected by human rights groups and activists.
According to the organisation's report “Amnesty International”, Iran last year has executed 246 people, leaving the state with the most executions in the world.
