Need for health insurance during Kosovo's pandemic

Pandemia COVID-19 has further distributed the lack of health insurance -- the law that was passed in the Kosovo Assembly more than 14 years ago Kosovo, but since then this law has found no implementation. The Assembly was able to pass this law in 2014, but it never came into force. E [...]

The Assembly was able to pass this law in 2014, but it never came into force.

And the lack of health insurance is suffering most citizens now at the time of COVID-19.

As citizens continue to pay their own health services that are not offered in public health institutions.

The treatment of COVIED-19, which causes coronary activity, lasts two to three weeks and in some cases longer. While the price of drugs that patients use for the virus is derived from 0.050 euros to 50 euros for a drug.

A family that has two to four people with COVID-19 spend about 2,000 to 3 thousand euros on therapy, says Federation of Health Union Chairman Blerim Syla.

He says the pandemic has shown their trueness of politicians in Kosovo.

“Yes, one of the main obstacles is the Health Insurance Law that has not yet reached even the fund. This is a tragedy for Kosovo citizens, for our people. I believe that this pandemic has shown the true face of all our politicians and that you have no chance of having such a law. What we can say is horror, because a family that has two to four people with COVID spend two thousand to three thousand euros”, said Syla on news.net.

Syla away has said the new government has given some promises, but that this law cannot be brought forward within two or three months.

I don't know, so far there's no transparency, this government has given some promises, but it needs to be known that the law can't be taken for money for a month or two, because there's a lot to do. It's the information system, the service list, the list of diseases, etc.”, Syla said.

We remember that Kosovo has no health insurance, even though in 2007 the Law was passed on this issue, but that it has never entered into force, as its chief UNMIK at the time had not signed this Law.

After Kosovo's independence in 2008, it was governments that withdrew the law due to budgetary implications.

Meanwhile, the Kosovo Assembly succeeded in adopting the new Law on Health Insurance in 2014. The application of this law was designed to precede a period of six months, during which the promises (grounds) would be collected.

Funding collection was warned to begin as early as July 1, 2017. At the time, 17m euros had been earmarked by the Government of Kosovo, until they later withdrew to be oriented to another destination, respectively, for pension fees for war veterans.

The health insurance issue has been put on hold since then, and citizens continue to remain without health insurance.
