Austria serves as a country coordinating the sending of vaccines to the Western Balkans as part of an EU mechanism for vaccine division.
Five Western Balkan countries: Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Albania have had little success in the vaccine campaign until Serbia has one of the highest levels of vaccine in Europe.
Lack of vaccines has even sparked protests in Bosnia.
Under this initiative we are showing that we are not leaving the region” behind, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said at a press conference, adding that these doses of the vaccine are not part of Austria's national quota, but are provided by the European Union.
Schallenberg said vaccines will be distributed by early next month based on the needs of Western Balkan countries.
Bosnia will receive the largest stake, with 214,000 doses, followed by Albania with 145,000 and North Macedonia with 19,000. Serbia is last with 36,000.
