European Commissioner Thierry Breton's comments threaten to increase tensions of a several-month dispute between the bloc and the vaccine producer.
Speaking of Le Parisien, Bretton said:
If we had received 100% of AstraZeneca vaccines promised to us, the European Union would be on the same level today with Great Britain in terms of vaccines. So I can say that the delays we've experienced are only because of AstraZeneca's failure. In the first quarter, (AstraZeneca) gave only one fourth of the doses we ordered, while the British took them all, even though our contract was signed before them in August 2020,” told Breton to the French newspaper.
The World Health Organisation called the distribution of vaccines in Europe <x0 slow” and appealed for speeding up the process.
