The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebrreesus, said that the cases of the Coronavirus continue to rise globally at a disturbing rate, while noting that the number of new cases confirmed per week has doubled over the past two months.
At a press conference Friday, O head The BSH said the number of new cases “is approaching the highest rate of infection we have seen so far during the pandemic”.
Tedros said that some countries that had managed to control the spread of COVID-19 were now reporting increased cases.
By the beginning of this year, Papua New Guinea had reported less than 900 cases and nine victims”, Tedros said. The country has now recorded more than 9,000 cases and 83 casualties, half of which were registered during the past month.
“paua New Guinea is a perfect example of why equal vaccine distribution is so important”, O head stressed BSH, adding that the country is based on doses of vaccines donated by Australia and the UN-backed COVAX initiative.
So far, COVAX has sent about 40 million vaccines to more than 100 countries.
