Xinjiang Chinese region has one of the world's first and most important trade routes known as the Silk Road, which connected ancient Chinese civilisation with the West across the Eurasian continent.
This prosperous region has not always enjoyed calm. Thousands of terrorist attacks from 1990 to 2016 killed a large number of innocent people and hundreds of police officers. Horrible attacks and bombings destroyed this region, leaving people in shock, grief, and panic. The damage was incalculable as stability in the region deteriorated rapidly. Authorities have worked hard to restore peace in this region.
CGTN has prepared a documentary cycle for fighting terrorism in the Xinjiang region.
“Documentary War in the shadows: The challenges of fighting terrorism in Xinjiang” the latest of the tetralology expose the extreme thinking and challenges that China faced in dealing with terrorism inside and outside the Xinjiang region.
The documentary uncovers methods used by extremist and separatist forces, including “people with two faces” among top officials in the region, as well as the way to penetrate violence and hatred in the region. The documentary also shows the great difficulties police officers have been through for decades.
Over the past four years, violence has disappeared, paving the way for rapid urbanisation and economic growth. Security and calm are not easily achieved, but this is only a preliminary victory in China's fight against terrorism.
