Passive since 1979, the volcano began showing signs of activity in December of last year, evaporating and smoking. This was added this week, prompting Chief Minister Ralph Honsalves to give orders for evacuation of the area Thursday evening.
The volcano finally erupted on Friday. Ash and smoke covered the surrounding area and created almost complete darkness, preventing the piercing of the sun's light, said a witness to the Reuters agency, who said he heard an explosion from his village.
Other smaller blasts continued throughout the day, Erouscilla Joseph said from the seismic Investigative Centre “West Indies”, adding that this type of volcano activity could continue for several weeks, if not months.
