Abbott has said that to protect democracy in Kosovo also means being part of the president's election.
The British ambassador has also said MPs can vote as they wish, but that it will be their responsibility to fulfill their constitutional role by supporting the process through participation and their vote at the session for the president.
“The location will soon hold a session to elect the new president. If this were to happen successfully, the process of forming institutions would have ended and they could start working seriously. If the vote fails, the constitution requires new elections to be made. Since the February 14th vote, my message to party leaders, both in public and in private, has been stable: 1) The largest voter turnout since 2004 was a clear signal from the people of Kosovo for change and effective government; 2) All parties, not only the winning party, should play a constructive role in forming institutions; 3) new elections amid an economic crisis and are not in anyone's interest. He hasn't changed today. Last night we saw many MPs speaking in defense of Kosovo's democratic institutions and democracy. My view is that protecting democracy and Kosovo institutions also means playing a full part in the Presidential elections. MPs can vote as they wish. But the responsible act is for them to fulfill their constitutional role by supporting the democratic process through their participation and vote”, the British diplomat has written.
