Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Labour Secretary Marty Wals agreed last week to freeze the threshold for visas known as H-2B, according to two sources close to the process.
Additional visas for seasonal workers who have nothing to do with agriculture will be added to 66 thousand annual H2-B visas, Reuters writes.
President Biden has abolished some of his predecessor's policies for immigrants, including the withdrawal of a proclamation that had been unable to applicantly access to the United States.
However, President Biden last Friday held the historically low number of refugees to be admitted to the United States this year. After much criticism, the White House said the figure would be revised next month.
The president's cautious approach seems to be related to concerns about the increasing number of immigrants that are flocking to the border with Mexico in recent months and did not want his country to look too open or too soft, a close American official told Reuters.
