The director of the Department for Prevention of Corruption at the Anti-Corruption Agency (AKK), Africa Atatshi, has said more than 40 senior officials have been charged with contempt of property.
According to him, all senior officials who haven't declared wealth and who haven't had enough reason against them have filed criminal charges.
Atashi said co-operation with the prosecution is advanced, until she adds that there is co-operation among them even before criminal charges are made.
“... are about 40 to 50, even though senior public officials have now brought rationale after the terms of the declaration of wealth and those after the statistics have emerged how much they have declared will follow. But for all of those who haven't declared their wealth and had little reason why they haven't done it, the agency has filed criminal charges and they're competent prosecutors where we keep information on a daily basis and that's how it's going to happen in this time of”, he has told Online Economy.
Atyshi hopes that by the end of this year the Law for the Agency will be finalised, and that it will declare property.
He says it is pre-priced that the AKK more go from the preventative aspect as well as to strengthen more in terms of wealth background.
Under the new Law, he says that they will be sanctioned as the initially inaccuracies of wealth, ending with an accusation but also with greater punishment.
What I can tell you is that we as an Agency are still not being punished as it is by law. It means that we have an apology and very low penalties for contempt of wealth, even though this will end with changing the Law on Proposal of Wealth, where it is meant to be sanctioned as an offense at first. If they are not declared in the first legal term, then fines, and if they once again do not declare their wealth then go out and commit a criminal offense, and this is a sufficient basis for the prosecution and the court... and could punish them with greater punishments of the future”.
Atyshi has warned all senior public officials who have left office or came for the first time to declare property within the 30 days deadline, as he says does not relate to the regular legal deadline.
