11 elected parliamentary professors must suspend work at universities

11 elected parliamentary professors in the Kosovo Assembly have found themselves in the midst of an important election: withdraw from the mandate as lawmakers or suspend work at universities. At their address, Naser Sahiti, the Uprector, has launched a request today to each of the 11 deputies suspend [the...] job.

At their address, Naser Sahiti, the UP reactor, has launched today a request to each of the 11 deputies suspend their work as professors at the University of Pristina. They can hold the post as professor only if they choose to withdraw from the MP's mandate.

The request of the UP's Rectorate is based on an opinion by the Ministry of Internal Affairs Legal on the issue of suspending the work of academic staff of public universities and all public service educational personnel in the event MPs are elected, reports Insander newspaper.

Such a request has today gone to Economic Faculty professor Hykmete Bajrami, elected to serve as deputy in the current assembly legislature.

I did not accept the legal option, but based on this opinion the Pristina University Rector has applied to each of the professors with the MP's mandate, to suspend work”, Bajrami said in a telephone conversation with Insader.

The former finance minister has made her choice between the assembly and the university.

“I have suspended work at the Economic Faculty”, underlined Bajrami, who has disputed the correctness of the Law for Public Officials due to the inability of service, at the same time, as Kosovo Assembly professor and deputy.

According to Bajrami, the suspension of work at the university by 11 professors serving in the assembly, “will greatly deplete quality” in the Kosovo Assembly and municipal assemblies.

The Public Officials Law does not allow the same people to maintain the position of deputy and university professor. This change has come after the 2019 Constitutional Court ruling.

Article 22 of this Law states: In the event of elections in the Kosovo Republic Assembly, which accepts the mandate, suspends the working relationship from the date that the Certificate of candidate selection by the end of the current mandate, in its equivalent position.
