The song was too familiar for many decades before it received this status. Her text was written by Francis Scott Kay during the 1812 war during the British bombing of Fort McHenry Castle in Baltimore of Maryland.
The author of the text witnessed the bombing itself. The morning after the attack, Kay was inspired to see the 15-star flag still hover over the fortress.
The flag indicated that the fortress had not surrendered and was willing to continue its resistance. The British fleet then fled, ending the danger to Baltimore.
Kay's poem was later combined with the music of a British song that was very much heard in the United States, creating what is now the American national anthem.
