“The opening issue of the Kosovo Embassy in Jerusalem is a work done”. That's what Foreign Affairs Minister Donika Gervala said.
“I have welcomed diplomatic recognition by Israel and I think that the issue of our embassy in Israel is a matter carried out. We will not enter diplomatic adventures to bring back into consideration an issue that has ended”, Gervala said at Kalxo Pernimes.
Days earlier, Turkey's President, Recep Tayyp Erdogan, in a letter sent to Prime Minister Albin Kurti has demanded that the opening of the Kosovo Embassy in Jerusalem be considered.
Kosovo opened its embassy in Jerusalem on 14 March, boosting the reactions of the Palestinian Authority, several Arab League and Turkey countries, which called on Kosovo leaders “to give up this irresponsible step”.
The opening of the embassy took place shortly after Kosovo and Israel established diplomatic relations after their pledge with the Washington Agreement signed in September last year.
The European Union praised the “for regret” Kosovo's decision as well.
Kosovo became the third country to open its diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.
At the end of 2017, former American President Donald Trump announced his government's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and in May 2018 the embassy in that city opened. Guatemala is the second country to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
