Vaccination and easing the effects of COVID-19, strengthening the economy and economic recovery should be Albin Kurti's top priorities, economic analyst Safet Gerjaliu told “Kosovo Online”.
Gerjaliu believes the new Kosovo government needs people's support and time to prove itself because it has inherited major problems from the previous period.
“I think they have the potential, they have the majority, and I am optimistic that there will be results, but I disagree with what the government of change calls. The change lasts a long time and could be another term. At this time, solving all problems from the past is an impossible mission, but the beginning is a great success for this government, which exists in abnormal conditions”, Gerjaliu said.
As an important fact, he declares that Kosovo now has a different and more flexible Albin Kurt than when it was prime minister for the first time, for which, besides pandemic, dialogue with Serbia will be the main challenge.
“I hope he will solve problems wisely, with the support of the United States and the European Union. There is no alternative to dialogue, dialogue with Serbia is a way we all need to understand and accept as something normal that is accompanying us. Maybe we should be a little patient. We should not just have a dialogue but solve problems. Serbia and Kosovo are tired, and the international community is tired of us. I think it's time for the dialogue to end”, Gerjaliu said.
Commenting on the fact that in the first quarter of 2021, exports from Kosovo increased by 40m euros compared to the same period last year, Gerjaliu says the economic sector used pandemic wisely by investing in production and quality.
“See, it's a new way to do business now. It's not a classic trade anymore, it's digitized and done via internet and other networks. All these contributions provided by the ministries of the line in the form of grants and subsidies have yielded results. I hope this will continue, because if we become a country that only exports money and has no commercial balance, then it is impossible to create jobs, have social peace and accelerate integration processes, when we are dependent only on imports”, Gerjaliu stressed.
