O Chief BSH Tedros Adhanom Ghebraesesus called today to launch a new investigation by experts specialising in the alleged flow of the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic from the labs in China and warned that international experts do not have access to data.
Although experts investigating the origin of the virus in January and February in China considered the hypothesis of the least possible laboratory flow, “further research is required, in new missions with specialised experts I am ready to place”, Ghebraseus said at a conference with member countries on the official report today.
The assumption that the virus caused by COVID-19 could have left the laboratory was strongly backed by the US administration of former President Donald Trump, based on information from their intelligence services. China has always firmly rejected that possibility.
Tedros spoke ahead of the official publication of the virus's origin report and at a press conference of several international experts who were in China in January 2021 to conduct an investigation, more than a year after the beginning of the WHO pandemic in December 2019.
He also stressed that international experts said they had difficulty accessing data during their stay in China.
“I hope that new joint investigations will be based on a wider and faster distribution of data,” added the head of the World Health Organisation (OBSH).
