Out of 1,431 ballots, Erdogan received 1,428 votes, no one was opposed, while three ballots were invalid, according to ruling party deputy chairman Ali Ihsan Yavuz.
After the voting process, the Turkish president thanked the co-partisans for praising him as worthy of the mayoral post.
I wish from God that our Congress will be useful to our country, nation and party. I would like to thank each one of you for praising me for the party leadership once again”, he said in front of the delegates.
The Justice and Development Party has been in power in Turkey since 2003, while during much of this period, President Erdogan has served as prime minister or president of the country.
In 2019, this party marked significant losses in local elections, losing in the largest city, Istanbul, and Turkey's capital, Ankara.
