No additional details were given of Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyeen's visit, but this visit, according to Reuters, could be a step towards bilateral improvement of relations.
Turkey, a candidate country for EU membership, failed to hold an official summit with EU leaders since May 2018, when Erdogan met with former European Council and European Commission leaders Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker.
Despite Turkey's decision to withdraw from the convention on protecting women from violence and worsening the human rights situation in the country, the EU says it is ready to work on boosting trade.
The two sides also want an agreement on new European aid to Syrian refugees in Turkey, worth several billion euros.
