American intelligence officials said on Tuesday that the Russian government tried to influence the 2020 US presidential campaign with “aludiated or groundless” against then candidate Joe Biden through several allies of former President Trump and his administration.
This assessment is given in a 15-page report on election interventions published by the National Intelligence Director's Office.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was reportedly aware and likely directed his own efforts to manipulate the US presidential campaign.
The report underlines the hint that Trump Allies played Moscow's game, amplifying on the eve of the November 3rd election claims filed against Biden by some Ukrainian figures linked to Russia. Beden defeated former President Trump in the election and took office as president on January 20th.
US intelligence agencies identified other attempts to influence voters, including a “multiplanetary secret impact” on Iran's part, intended to lower support for Mr. Trump. The report also points out as untrue a version supported by Trump allies that China was interfering in the name of the Biden candidate. The report concludes that Beijing “made no effort to intervene”.
“Kina sought stability in her relations with the United States and thought that she would not be worth (something), because any election outcome would not create any advantage enough to jeopardise a response if seized,” reportedly.
American officials said they had also found efforts on the part of Cuba, Venezuela and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah to influence US elections. However, say the report's authors, “generally, we estimate that they were smaller compared to those undertaken by Russia and Iran”.
US intelligence agencies and former special prosecutor Robert Mueller several years ago concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 elections to push Trump's candidacy with a propaganda campaign aimed at damaging his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton. /voa
