In practice, however, much of Texas has rarely applied the command to wear masks during the past year.
Several large trade businesses, food stores and restaurants in Texas have said they will continue asking people to wear masks in their businesses, which, according to Governor Greg Abbott's command on easing restrictions, is their right.
Texas was one of the first states to reopen the economy after the first wave of coronary cases last May and the country's second most populated state to lead this trend again last week, when Republican Governor Greg Abbott announced ease of restrictions amid the decline in the daily number of new infections with COVID -19 and the distribution of vaccines.
The Austin City Council voted to force the wearing of masks, but did not elaborate on how this would apply. Members of the council openly challenged state officials, risking the latter file charges against the city.
“In Austin, we are committed to saving lives“, the city council member Greg Cassar wrote on Twitter.
A tweet of the Texas Attorney General's Office reported that “was being seen legal ways available” to address Austin's case.
The Texas Educational Agency's guidelines for public schools speak of the continued use of masks, while the homes of the elderly in this country will not be lifted.
