He made that decision at a time when the disease in Brazil is spreading widely, and so did a series of mistakes made by many public health experts.
Marcelo Queiroga, president of the Brazilian Cardiology Association, will replace Eduardo Pazuello, an army general with expertise in logistics who took office last May despite lack of previous experience in the sector.
Earlier, Pazuello agreed at a news conference that Bolsonaro intends to replace him. The first candidate for the post -- cardiologist Ludhmila Hajyar -- rejected it.
Pazuelo's departure paved the way for Brazil to become the fourth Health Minister in a year, even though he led the ministry for a long time than his two predecessors.
The country in Latin America is trying to control the spread of the virus, but without result. The country has registered nearly 280 thousand victims of the virus.
