Two weeks before the assembly of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), where the election of the new chairman of this party is expected, only the acting defence minister and LDK chairmanship member Anton Quinn has reconfirmed the goal of taking the party's wheel. Other controversial candidates have not officially confirmed the candidacy.
LDK Chairman Isa Mustafa has decided to call the party's extraordinary assembly to offer his resignation from this post -- a decision that followed the LDK's poor outcome in the February 14th parliamentary elections. Based on current results, the LDK has been halving its votes since the October 6th elections, 2019. Who are the main contenders?
Anton Quin and Lutfi Haziri are the only ones who have not ruled out the possibility of being candidates taking over the party.
Anton Kuni on Monday reaffirmed that he will be a candidate for LDK chairman.
I will be part of the LDK chairmanial race”, said Quinn. I have announced the leadership of the party for this decision and now I expect it to proceed with the” process, Quinn said.
Lutfi Haziri, who is also chairman of Gjilan, has said nothing is final.
“ande am not an official candidate. I will make the decision in a week”, Haziri told the REL. Support for Haziri's candidacy is also offering local LDK structures from Anamorawa. Some of them, including the deputy chairman of the LDK branch in Gjilan, Imet Candman, have posted on social networks a greeting for party sympathisers with a picture of the Haziri War.
Members of the LDK leadership and branch have even mentioned the name of Cameron Shala, but the latter has never been declared to date if it will be part of the race.
Kosovo's incumbent Prime Minister, Avdullah Hoti, who is part of the LDK leadership, has also published a photo with message on social networks, along with Kujtim Shala. Meanwhile, Peja Community Chairman Gazmend Muhhazier confirmed for REL will not be part of the LDK chairmanship race. Muhharrier, who is also a member of the party's leadership, estimates the race is scheduled under parliamentary elections. “I believe that the electorate has determined by its vote who can come to the helm of the LDK and I think the message is also well understood by the LDK leadership, but also by its own membership”, Mujarri said.
However, he prefers that there be more candidates in the race and that the new chairman be elected by a secret vote. Muharnier did not show who he favors in this race.
We will hold meetings at the Peja branch. We will see who will be the candidate and whom we will vote on as branch”, Mujajiri said. “If (the new key) reads well the message it received, the LDK will be able to return very strongly in local elections and other national elections”, he added.
How is the new chairman elected?
The LDK statue stipulates that candidacies for mayor take place in the work of the assembly. Article 25 of the statute envisions that “which candidacy must be approved by 50 percent plus 1 of the delegates present”. Taking into account the fact that the LDK assembly has 355 delegates, including the party chairman, each potential candidate needs 178 support votes to enter the candidate list for chairmanship.
But if the assembly does not approve more than one candidacy, then the assembly decides on how to elect and vote for chairman. In the history of the LDK, this is the first time a mayor resigns. The LDK was founded in 1989 and there have been three heads ever since: Ibrahim Rugova (party co-founder), Fatmir Sejdiu and Isa Mustafa.
