The National Committee for Immmunisation had recommended disruption for security reasons and Canadian provinces, which manage health in the country, announced the suspension.
“There is an essential uncertainty about the benefit of obtaining AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for adults under 55 in view of possible risks”, said medical doctor Shelley Deeks, deputy head of the National Consultative Committee for Immmunisation.
Mrs. Deeks added that updated recommendations come between new data from Europe suggesting the risk of blood clotting is now potentially high in 100,000.
She said most patients in Europe who had a rare blood clot following the AstraZeneca vaccine were women under 55 years of age, and the fatality rate among those developing clots is up to 40%.
