Brussels changes the names of stations to names of famous women

Public transport operator in Brussels (STIB) marked International Women's Day today by reappointed 10 metro stations on behalf of famous women in one day and committed to reappointed 17 bus and tram stations forever over the next three years in order to re-enlist “pheminize its” network. The late American civil rights leader Rosa Parks, the girls' rights champion Malala Yousafzai and teenage climate change activist Greta Thundberg were among those under whom four subway stations were named in the Belgian capital during the day, Reuters reports.
The STIB operator said that the permanent overhaul of long-standing stations and stations presents practical challenges, but that he is committed to bringing greater balance to his network over time.
The STIB added that many public transportation stops have been appointed according to men whose roads have been designated in the neighbourhood and that there are 14 times more men's appointed ways than women in Brussels.
By the time names were chosen, the society was different. Women did not have a role in society then, unlike today. It was the men who made the decisions and they undoubtedly chose the names of the men,”, said the statement.
