But doctors at the NYU Langone Medical Center announced on Wednesday that, after 23 hours in the operating room, the first successful world facial and hand transplant was performed on the youth.
“He is the most motivated patient I have ever met”, Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, head of the team that finished the operation.
There were over a hundred hand transplants performed successfully, and about 50 facial transplants. So there was basically no reason why they couldn't be done together, successfully”, he added.
Earlier, there were only two attempts to perform such transplants, but both were unsuccessful.
