In an interview for the German daily Bild, Serbia's President Aleksandar Vuciq said it is necessary to find a compromise for Kosovo.
He said that we are working hard on this, and that given what he sees today, especially after new US President Joseph Biden took office, there will still be pressure only on Serbia.
Vuciq responded to the statement that Serbia can join the EU only “along with the neighbouring state of Kosovo”, which he does not know, and the question of when this will change:
You say it's a neighbor's place, we don't. It's a matter of vision and the state of the EU. We see it differently. Yes, and we have to find a compromise with Pristina and work hard for it. For you, it's something that's been done since 2008. But for us it's not, of course, it is. For Madrid, Athens, Nicosia, Bratislava, it is also not clear, they do not recognise Pristina. ”
Asked what that compromise might look like, Vucic said he was concerned, as, according to what he sees today, and especially after the inauguration of US President Joseph Biden, there would only be pressure on Serbia.
I just got noticed then. If we want to maintain peace, if we want more investors to come from Germany, then we need sustainable solutions. I don't believe in frozen conflicts, unlike most people here, because there's always a danger that someone will come and remove those”, he said.
Asked who it is easier to negotiate with, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chinese President Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron or German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Vuciq underlined that he should speak to everyone, but they must talk to themselves.
During the interview, Vucic expressed the desire to say something to Chancellor Merkel, as she is leaving politics at the end of the week.
I mean, honestly, I think about all the good and I want to say it now. She saved us in 2015, provided peace here. We are not always in the same position, for example about Kosovo. But she always has time to listen to us,” he said.
