According to Anadolu Agency, Dr. Orhan Ataş, professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Ataturk University in Turkey, in the eastern province of Erzurum, told AA they admitted several new patients with COVID-19 with unexpected sight loss.
After tests and tests, we discovered that the loss of sight was caused by the blocking of the retinal vein associated with COVID-19. In addition to medical therapy, we applied hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat these patients”, said Atiş, who is also the principal deputy of the University Research Hospital.
“As a result of treatment, almost all the damage COVID-19 caused to the retina was repaired and the vision level returned to normal”, he added.
He stressed that these cases are important because of the local eye impact, along with the systemic side effects of the disease.
“We have shared knowledge with the world scientific circles that COVID-19 could cause the blockade of the retinal vein as well as the way it can be cured”, Ataş said.
Since December 2019, pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 2,42 million people worldwide.
According to American University data “Johns Hopkins”, worldwide over 110 million cases were recorded, and more than 61.64 million people were cured by COVID-19.
