One of the most extravagant things of the drug lord was the creation of a zoo of hippos, cans, giraffes, elephants, and other exotic animals in his hall where he made the world's largest cocaine empire in the '80s.
When he was killed by police in 1993, many of the animals were confiscated or killed, writes The Guardian.
But the hippos were abandoned in Hacienda Napoles because of their cost and logistical affairs for transportation.
Government efforts to control their reproduction have had no effect, with the number of hippos growing in the last eight years from 35 to 65 and 80.
A group of scientists are alarming that hippos pose a major threat to the biodiversity of the area and can lead to deadly matches with humans.
They have said that these hippos must be killed, or their number may range from 1500 to 2035.
