US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with Turkish President Ibrahim Kalin today, voicing Washington's strong opposition to the purchase of the Russian missile defence system.
He said the new US administration aims to make NATO a key pillar of its policy to strengthen transatlantic security. In that plan, he raised the issue of buying the Russian system S-400 from Ankara, saying it undermines the consistency and effectiveness of the NATO alliance.
According to a White House statement, “National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke on the phone today with Ibrahim Kalin, spokesman for Turkey's president.
Sullivan underlined the Biden administration's desire to build constructive US-Turkey ties to enhance co-operation and manage disputes effectively.
He expressed the government's intention to strengthen transatlantic security through NATO, voicing concern that Turkey's purchase of the Russian missile system S-400 undermines the alliance's cohesion and effectiveness. Sullivan welcomed the resumption of talks between Turkey and Greece.
They agreed to work together on global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, and to consult closely on regional issues of common interest” the US statement concludes.
