The US State Department said that the interests of the United States in the Western Balkans are sustainable and their strategy towards these countries is essentially unchanged.
Comments were made by senior official Matthew Palmer, in an interview with the American Voice service in Bosnian.
Matthew Palmer, deputy secretary of state and special representative for the Western Balkans, said that under President Biden's new administration, a continuation of American engagement in the Western Balkans can be expected for a strong and stable partnership with the US.
American policy, American engagement, American strategy in the Western Balkans has been essentially sustainable by administration in administration. That's because American interests are constant,”.
Palmer runs American diplomacy to integrate these countries into Western institutions.
What we would like to see is that the countries of the Western Balkans are strong, alive, prosperous, at peace with themselves and with neighbours, as well as integrated into European institutions. This means membership in the European Union for all Western Balkan countries, membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for all who make that decision and aspire to membership,” said Palmer.
After the February 14th elections in Kosovo, the US State Department has said the US will encourage the new government to give priority to dialogue with Serbia.
Palmer says efforts to normalise Kosovo-Serbia are important.
The United States is investing in this direction in considerable efforts, energy and political capital. We fully support the process of dialogue led by the European Union and the work of Miroslav Lajcak as Special Representative for the European Union” said Palmer.
He said positive steps in a certain direction in the Western Balkans have positive consequences elsewhere in the region.
“If there could be normalisation and reconciliation Serbia-Kosovo, I would say this is good for all in the region,” said deputy deputy secretary of state. / VOA
