During a virtual meeting with NATO leaders, Stoltenberg said the Taliban should meet “conditions” by reducing violence and ending support for “international terrorist groups like al Qaida. ”
The defence ministers of NATO member states are meeting virtually at a two-day conference to discuss a series of issues facing the alliance. The detailed discussions will be held Thursday about the status of 2,500 American troops and 7,000 other coalition forces in Afghanistan.
The Taliban warned NATO through a statement Saturday against “the successor of the petitioner”, which they said does not serve the interests of any party involved in the 20-year conflict.
“Whoever demands the duration of wars and conquest will be held responsible for them, as for the previous two decades”, was stated in the statement.
Before Wednesday's meeting, German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Kerrenbauer warned that peace talks have not progressed enough to enable the withdrawal of NATO troops.
“This means that we must prepare for changing the security situation and a growing threat to our international troops and soldiers”, she said through a statement.
Former President Donald Trump agreed with the Taliban last year that American troops leave Afghanistan until May 2021 in exchange for conditions involving breaking ties with al-Qaeda and starting peace talks with the Afghan government.
US President Joe Biden has said his administration will review the deal, while the Pentagon accuses the Taliban of failing to meet commitments to reduce violence.
