The MV Helios Ray ship suffered an explosion Friday morning.
An American defence official in Washington said the blast left holes in the water line on both sides of the cargo ship's body. The cause did not become clear immediately and no casualties were reported.
“Iran is seeking to crack down on Israeli infrastructure and Israeli citizens”, He told GANTZ public broadcaster Khan. “The location of the ship in the relative vicinity of Iran raises the notion, assessment, that they are Iranians”.
“GANTZ said, adding that a deeper investigation has yet to be carried out.
Iranian officials have not yet been approved for the event.
Iran said in November it would provide a “-calculated response to the murder of their top nuclear scientist, for whom Israel blamed.
Tensions have increased in the Gulf region since the United States re-established sanctions on Iran in 2018, after then President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major powers.
