Washington announced it has carried out air strikes on the positions of pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border, in response to missile attacks against American targets in Iraq.
The latest “American actions strengthen and expand Islamic State activities in the region”, said Ali Shamkhan, a member of Iran's Supreme Council. He made these comments during his meeting in Iran with Iraqi Foreign Minister Faud Hussein.
“Sulmi to resistance forces against terrorists is the start of a new round of organised terrorism”, he was quoted as saying according to Reuters. Iraqi militia officials said one fighter was killed and four others injured from these attacks. The Biden administration has made it clear that it will act in order to avoid a major escalation of the situation in this region.
Shamkhan said that “will confront the US plan to revive terrorism in the region”, but did not provide further details. Western officials and some Iraqi leaders have blamed Iran-backed groups for being involved in deadly missile attacks on American targets in Iraq this month.
