German Health Minister Jens Spahn said he is open to Germany's use of anti-commercial vaccines produced in Russia or China.
If a vaccine is safe and effective, it doesn't matter which state it was produced in, then it can certainly help defeat pandemic”, Spahn told Frankfurter Allgemen Zeitung.
He said the vaccine against the Coronavivrus must go through a process of authorisation.
These comments by the German minister come at a time when Europe is facing delays in remittances of vaccines from Pfizer and BioNTech companies.
On Friday, January 29, Russia said it would be able to supply the European Union with 100 million doses of its Sputnik-V vaccine -- doses sufficient for the inoculation of 50 million people.
Russia has already applied for authorization of the vaccine to the European Bar Agency (EMA). Regarding the Sputnik-V vaccine, there has been great scepticism since Russian authorities, in mid-August last year, announced the discovery of this vaccine, which has not yet gone through all necessary clinical studies.
Berlin City Mayor Michel Mueller has written a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying Germany should create “national vaccination plans”. He has expressed his idea that the state should see the vaccine supplied outside the EU.
Due to criticisms over the impasse in the anti-commercial vaccine campaign, as well as problems that have emerged in the production of vaccine doses, Merkel is expected to hold talks on the issue Monday with German officials. German leaders, federal ministers, representatives of companies producing vaccines, as well as European Commission representatives, are expected to participate in this virtual meeting.
Germany on Sunday reported 11,192 new infections. Since the beginning of the pandemic, this country has registered 56,945 victims from the Coronobrus.
