Investigators believe that the man struck his wife, his daughters, and his mother - in - law for murder before he killed himself.
Firefighters found bodies at the house in Radevormwald, near the town of Wuppertal, on Friday.
The man was a 41-year-old, his 37-year-old wife, the girls were 1 and 4 and his 77-year-old mother-in-law, Ap reports.
Police and prosecutors said on Saturday that they believe the man killed the rest of the family, set the house on fire and then stabbed himself. They suspect the motive was the failure of his marriage.
