What failed to protect the Capitol on January 6th

Two Senate commissions are holding a hearing Tuesday during which they are considering the attack on the Capitol on January 6th, focusing on security issues as well as the response to the event by law enforcement forces. Before the Internal Security Commission and Government Affairs are witnessing top security officials at Senate Michael Stenger and the one for security in the House of Representatives, Paul Irving. The commissions will also hear the testimony of former Capitol Police chief Steven Sund and the acting director of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert Cate.

For officers Stanger and Irving, their testimony will be the first public comment since they resigned, immediately after the Capitol's attack by former President Trump's supporters.

Senator Amy Klobuchar told the agency “Associated Press” that lawmakers will focus on the way security agencies shared the information before the attack, the time it took to dislodge the National Guard troops to help overload officers of the Capitol Police and if the command structures of the units responsible for the security of the Capitol contributed to security failures.

Klobuchar said the panels will hold at least one more session as part of the investigation they are conducting to examine the response of the Department of Defence, National Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation to the event.

The violent attack on the Capitol took place as lawmakers gathered to reap victory in the presidential election of the Democrat Joe Biden. Protesters broke windows and doors and clashed with security workers, leaving behind dozens of injured policemen. The attack forced members of Congress to leave, and only hours later they certified the election outcome.

The violence in Congress left five people dead, including a capital police officer.

A week after the attack, the House of Representatives officially filed charges against Trump for inciting the attack on the Capitol. After the trial of this case, the Senate declared the former president innocent. /voa
