Navajo was arrested in January after returning from Germany, where he was treated after poisoning in Russia, for which he blamed the Kremlin.
On February 2nd, a Russian court sentenced Navalny on charges that he had violated the conditional sentence for which he was previously sentenced while staying in Germany.
The EU has previously condemned the politicisation of the Russian judiciary and called for the unconditional release of Navajo.
A “political agreement” on the new sanctions was reached today at a ministers' meeting and EU diplomacy head Joseph Borrell is in charge of proposing a list of Russian officials against whom they will be deployed.
“Sanctions should include Russian police and justice officials, responsible for the unacceptable treatment of Navlanny”, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schalenberg said.
Before the meeting, Moscow warned the EU that it was “ready to react” in the case of new unilateral, illegal, restrictive “measures, EU Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov told the German newspaper Die Welt.
