The new legislation allows people to sue their partners during the divorce if they have held more responsibility during their relationship
A man was ordered by the court to pay his former wife thousands of dollars for her time of domestic work and child care during their marriage years, in a historic decision by divorce judges in Beijing.
The verdict has sparked a widespread debate in China after the man was ordered to pay his former husband 50,000 yen for five years of unpaid domestic work.
Development comes after adopting a new civil code recently, aimed at protecting the best of individual rights.
The legislation allows people to sue their partners during the divorce if they have held more responsibility during their relationship, such as domestic chores.
In question, the man known as Mr. Chen sought a divorce last year from his wife, Mrs. Wang, after they were married in 2015.
By deciding in favour of the woman, Fangshan's area court ordered Chen to pay his former wife 2,000 yeans every month, as well as a 50,000- yuan fee for her previous domestic job.
The judge said the division of property is done by sharing assets while adding later: “Domestic work is a constant value”.
The case has launched a widespread debate in social media on the estimated value of household chores, while many said it was underestimated, while others applauded the decision.
A nanny has several thousand yen wages a year, so this fee is very little,” wrote one of them.
While another said: “Grat should have their independence. Do not quit after you get married. ”
